Sorry for the harsh-sounding title, but I promise, I’m not trying to crush your dreams (in fact, quite the opposite).
Did you know that in 2025 alone, Americans submitted over 5 million business applications? That’s like upwards of 10,000 new businesses a day!
What does this stat tell us? Mentioning the fact that you launched your own moisture-wicking clothing brand, Korean-inspired smashburger operation, or AI-powered language tutoring start-up in high school – while no small feat! – isn’t enough to distinguish you from a sea of other college-bound entrepreneurs.
That’s why as you’re crafting your story for admissions readers, you’ve gotta look objectively at the business you lovingly built from scratch and ask a blunt, burning question:
So what?

And the same applies to any life experience you want to highlight in your application:
“My nonprofit has donated 5,000 books to underserved schools.”
So what?
“For two summers, I assisted researchers studying breast cancer cells at a university lab.”
So what?
“As student body president, I organized our school’s first-ever Multicultural Storytelling Night.”
So what?
What made your journey unexpected, chaotic, uplifting, transformative, groundbreaking, death-defying, or otherwise deserving of its own Netflix documentary?
In short, what makes your story different from every other student founder’s?
Was it the gap or problem you noticed? That slip-up that nearly tanked you? A customer who led you to revamp your strategy? The unusual way you came up with ideas? The impact you made in your community?

Admissions officers literally read every application through a “So what?” lens. The deeper you dig beneath the surface of who you are and what you did, the more compelling your answer to that question will be.
